Reading Response #3

I read the essay #Sullie. It was a very powerful essay describing how powerful words can be and the fact they can be able to take away a person’s life. The author had a great set up throughout the essay and the way she portrayed the message she wanted to deliver. I want to give the essay a total of 86%. The author did clarify all that she wanted to say in a clear format and the way she described how the artist had lived her life. I would have wanted to see more quotes on the people who were really close to her and describe her experience about the hate on a more personal level. I really like how she even incorporated quotes about how Sullie felt and how she wanted people to stop judging her because she only wanted to progress in life, but unfortunately things did not go her way. Overall, the author did a really great job in organizing her thoughts and details.

The Incel society had developed overtime from what they originally were when they began. The author noticed that the Incel society back then used to go online and ask each other about advice when it came to them being hurt by a significant other or a person they really liked. However, overtime that had changed. The website then became a platform of hatred for women. As the author investigated more he had seen that this platform was full of men that seen women has toxic human beings. They wish a lot of hatred on women and even banned them from the platform. The author of the writing has gotten a lot of information himself by reviewing the comments of what the people feel. He has seen that these people are full of hate but mainly because they are very hurt. So they wish bad upon women and sometimes even talk about hurting women. As stated in the text, the Incels had worshipped a man who killed people on the sidewalk with his fan, giving him praise and gratitude for eliminating people who supported being around women. Unfortunately, the author saw these patterns the more he scrolled through the site. It showed people’s true intentions on the site when it came to women. The author’s text relates to the wider text because it shows how people come together that have something in common and look for support from each other and sometimes that support may be harmful but people still want to be accepted.

Privileges

Posted by Thais Nunez on

Some of my privileges may affect my research in the economic sense. I am researching an online trading community. In order to trade, one must need money. Unfortunately, if one does not have money that makes it complicated for a person to join the community. As a person who has their own job and who does not live at such a disadvantage, it was easier for me to join the community. I was able to wait for my next paycheck and join right away. Some of these people had to wait in order to join the company. They had to wait month or ask people for money in order to start. In my case, I was even able to fund my account and I did not have to wait months like the others did. When one person joins the platform, they are creating their own business. When they create their own business, they are able to add people to it and once they start, they get paid by the company. Once that happens, the people who did not have enough money to start, now have some money to fund their account. However, I am able to fund my account with the money that the company gives me and when my job pays me. Some of the people in the company are just able to fund their accounts with the money given to them by the company. Sometimes, I do not realize how fortunate I am to being very ambitious and hard working.

The online community Wu is trying to portray are people who are looking for answers. They express their concerns and their urgent need for answers especially from the doctor they are asking. The verbal portrait she creates of this community are concerned people. They go through their loved ones having FD and looking for answers to help cure them. With the doctor’s responses, some of them are sort of helpless. For example, the doctor in one of the posts answering back to an individual says that the person thinking they have the illness has to accept it and go for treatment themselves. The sources she uses are real life people who are actually going through it themselves. She takes tracks of the dates and how it was asked. She also records how the doctor responds and if the doctor seems as if the only way to cure the disease is for the people to accept their stage and get the help they need. The role that footnotes plays in her finding is that they keep track of the peoples comments she reads and what may be important to her. She singles out the things that are important or that she associates with herself with. Wu compares herself a lot to what she reads and she is concerned about what damage she causes herself and she appreciates that she is actually realizing the harm she is doing her body. When she came to realize she had FD she wanted to have high chances of having a good outcome.

Field Observation Discussion #3

Posted by Thais Nunez on

I observed the field I work in while I was on my break and at the end of the day. I work in a dental surgery office. They only remove teeth; for example, wisdom teeth. It is a very fast paced environment. There is no actual time to rest. It seems that the mornings are much more busier than the afternoons. The assistants have to rush getting the room ready, setting up the sterilization area, and take all the x-rays. After that, they quickly have to set up the patient in the computers and the rooms before the doctor gets there. As the surgery is happening, the assistants have to do everything that the doctor asks and keep out their way.  After the surgeries, the assistants have to quickly clean the rooms and set up the next patient. As I observed, I noticed how sometimes the assistants got frustrated because they are overworked. I often heard them complaining about other females that do not put the work in and often heard about them complaining about having horrible management. As I spoke to some of the girls, I heard stories about how they have rebelled by quitting in bunches to fix the company; however, clearly it did not work. At the end of the day, the assistants have to clean the entire office. They have to clean the chairs, the table tops, and even the blood bucket and any little blood or teeth they see on the floor. After that they have to restock everything and prepare the room for the next day. This field was very stressful to observe because it constantly moving quickly.

Discussion #2 “Hustlers”

Posted by Thais Nunez on

In the article, there were many beliefs portrayed. For example, any Wall Street men who came in they knew automatically they had money or when a stripper gets older they are seen as “ancient.” Background information that was helpful was how she used to make her money when she was younger, but many people questioned that because it sounded similar to another person’s story. They article was very specific in getting her progress correctly for example, how she got her first job stripping and how she moved. She described her informants by giving a physical description so it would be easier for the audience to paint them in their heads. With that description she used similes so we can compare and have a more accurate picture of their personality in our head as well. Descriptions have help her show more of a personal side to the story as well. The way she described the struggle helped us get an inside image and see things from her perspective and her views. As a person, I really liked the way she described things because it made me feel as if I was actually there seeing what was happening and how her life was.

A Report from Occupied Territory

Posted by Thais Nunez on

In the writing by James Baldwin, he shows the ways that many whites see the black race. They have certain language to refer them to the black people that has become a very popular word to refer to those with dark skin unfortunately. Some questions that fieldworkers should ask to uncover more truths are what made these people think it was alright to define dark skinned people that word. They should figure out why they thought they were not worthy of their respect or kindness. A fieldworker should get to study the minds of the people committing these indecent acts to understand why they think so poorly of those people. However, the fieldworker should also get into the minds of the people being called these names and try to understand how they feel and how they think is proper to react. The fieldworker can use the witnesses that see those things happen as sources because they can observe how both sides react.
